Malaysia’s Trade Performance In 2024 and Bilateral Trade with Myanmar
Malaysia’s trade performance in 2024 continued to deliver outstanding performance, recording another milestone with trade reaching new heights. Trade, exports and imports rebounded in 2024 with trade amounting to RM2.879 trillion (USD630.47 billion), an increase of 9.2% year-on- year (y-o-y), surpassing the RM2 trillion (USD437.02 billion) mark for four consecutive years. Similarly, exports exceeded RM1 trillion (USD218.51 billion) for four consecutive years, rising 5.7% to RM1.508 trillion (USD 330.26 billion). This achievement accounted for 87.2% of the target set for 2025 exports under the Mid-term Review of the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RMKe-12). Meanwhile, imports were up by 13.2% y-o-y to RM1.371 trillion (USD300.20 billion), crossing the RM1 trillion mark for the third successive year. This exceptional performance has resulted in a trade surplus of RM136.88 billion (USD30.06 billion), for the 27th consecutive year since 1998.
In 2024, Malaysia’s total trade with Myanmar declined by 9.7% to USD 991.8 million compared to 2023. Malaysia’s exports to Myanmar decreased by 20.9% to USD 686.0 million, while imports from Myanmar increased by 33.0% to USD 305.8 million.
Malaysia’s largest export to Myanmar was petroleum products, valued at USD 411.6 million, accounting for 60.2% of the total export share, followed by iron and steel products (USD 68.0 million, 10.0% share), palm oil & palm oil-based agriculture products (USD 48.8 million, 7.0% share), chemicals and chemical products (USD 42.0 million, 6.1% share), and processed food (USD 30.6 million, 4.4% share).
Malaysia’s imports from Myanmar in 2024 mainly comprised natural rubber (USD 135.4 million, 44.1% share), other agricultures (USD 60.2 million, 19.9% share), textiles, apparel and footwear (USD 34.3 million, 11.1% share), manufactures of metal (USD 18.8 million, 6.2% share) and processed food (USD 17.0 million, 5.6% share).
In 2024, Myanmar was Malaysia’s 44th largest trading partner, 39th largest export destination, and 55th largest import source globally.
